Facebook

Facebook is already used by some libraries as a portal to their catalogues and even online touring ( Inner Temple Library & Loughborough University Library ).

Originally the people who run facebook where not very supportive of libraries, as I found in this article from SLA-IT about the University of Kentucky's facebook page. This has changed however, if you want to join up as a library go through this page.

Google Docs

Google docs is extrodinarily useful for a public library trying to provide internet access. We have 1 computer providing word processing applications, for security reasons it's not hooked to the internet. Online apps. like this make it possible to word process for our clients while on the web (very common with students!)

My blogs on my RSS feed.

I just turned on the feed options on bloger (in the settings tab) and now I've listed my blog on my RSS feeder (bloglines). This very blog will soon become a new blog listed on my bloglines feeds !

This should come in handy if anyone makes a comment - I should then get a feed .

library thing !

Now everyone must endure an accounting of my literary tastes !

this listing may work best as a warning....

must check into the HTML and see if there is a way to add it to the library's blog with new releases.

Video danger!

You tube and google video are dangerous. I have seen great chunks of my personal time disappear to meandering through their enormous stock of movies!

Having said this they do provide excelant storage capacity for some very useful movies (such as those we've watched through this course!). In my last post I was excited about the possibility of a procedure manual wiki for library staff, this adds the element of a visual method for people to follow. Take for example the operation of a microfische reader. It would be much easier to see it being used than to read a description.

on a less serious note, for Monty Python fans, this is funny

The Question of Wikis

I recently read the book The cult of the amateur by Andrew Keen which does portray some of the dangers of the web 2.0. He had some interesting points on wiki which might make the information professional nervous about the concept of such a huge enterprise as wikipedia.

I've not had to opportunity or need to create a wiki yet, but I have found my own council's entry could be improved and that I might try starting an entry for my library from scratch.

I also love the concept of a procedures wiki for the library. How many weekend shifts have I come across something that a simple answer would have solved, but a colleague hasn't been there to answer.

Bloglines Rocks!

I've been using bloglines as an RSS reader now for about 2 years and it's terrific. Before I started using it I spent a great deal of time creating cumbersome lists of favorites to I could methodically check a whole lot of on-line comics but now I can just call into one site and read them all. Later I added pop goes the library and librarymarketing blogspot and some other library dedicated sites because they throw up some pretty good ideas. My library could feed out information on author talks and new books/dvds which our patrons would love !

Flickr Fun

I posted some images that the New York Public Library has put on Flickr. They're part of their photo collection and some are very cool. I love 'man playing a tuba'. Makes me want to wear a bow tie. Bow ties are cool (nerdy sci fi pop culture reference...). If you look at my more recent posts there's a full sized picture from Flickr!
